Paul Griggs - Guitar Collection (Vinyl)

Top-rate pop harmonies Beatles-influenced craftily blended with a hint of psychedelia and venturing into prog. The band started in as The Cortinas by Paul Griggs who was 19 at the time joined by his younger brother Nigel who was 14 ; the name was changed to "Octopus' in Page who at a time was touring with Cliff Richard and preceded Elton John with huge spectacles was trying to repeat the success of his previous label, Page One Records, and although he had his share in The Troggs and The Kinks, no sufficient advertising budget and distribution were at hand.

The debut album of "Octopus" sold merely copies. Needless to say that as usual it comes with well researched leaflet written by Stefan Granados full of information and rare photos. In fact, it covers the whole heritage of "Octopus" and is an impressive testimony of versatile talent. I'd loved this CD, but I expected a heavier sound the cover promises it.

For my delight, I've found gems of pop psychedelia: "Rainchild" is my favourite, but "Summer", "Thief", "Tide" and "Laugh at the Poor Man" are pretty good too. But it worths the money, surely.
