What possible defence can I present to this onslaught of atavistic pleasures? What else can I buy that does all this for me? What easier access to my creative soul can the entire world offer? Because I am a victim. Because vinyl is all mixed up with retromania and the fetish for vintage. Because the need for analogue springs from a steampunky confusion about a world that cannot tolerate its digital self.
Because, what God can I turn to when a record store is, in the end, more significant a spiritual experience than any available in a church? Then again, on this April 22, , I could make the ultimate final offering — and buy David Live once again, in heavy vinyl, but otherwise an exact rendering of the one I already own.
A completely pointless — and therefore perfect — purchase of pop. The exception is black looks appropriate for formal or professional occasions regardless of the season. Decipher when it's appropriate to wear your patent leather shoes. Leather includes any animal skin that's been tanned—a process of soaking the hide in an acidic solution that preserves, softens and makes it easier to work with. No bows or extra decoration either though think we got away with a punch hole butterfly once!
Most new turntables will come with cartridges and needles installed, but you should make sure of that before you buy one. Unless you're going to DJ or you're a hardcore audiophile, you don't have to think all that much about your cartridge — a pretty basic cartridge will do the trick. Since your needle or stylus, as it is also called will gradually wear down from use, you will need to periodically replace it.
Here's a good guide for how to do that. This is the rod that that holds the pickup cartridge and stylus over the record. It may not look important, but it's actually crucial to playback, as it controls the tracking and pressure on the needle as it reads the record's groove. Most turntables will have an adjustable counterweight so you can have greater control over this pressure.
Most modern turntables will have perfectly fine tone arms, but more expensive models will generally have better, more sophisticated tone arm mechanisms. RPM stands for revolutions per minute, as in how many times the platter will spin completely in a minute. You will almost never deal with 78 RPM records, so don't worry about that.
The vast majority of 7-inch singles will be 45 RPM, and inch records Vinyl comes in different sizes mainly based on how much music is contained on the record. A standard 7-inch single is smaller than a full-length album because it contains less music, and is intended to be less expensive.
But there's also a limit to how much sound can be crammed onto a side of vinyl of any size before the quality of the audio deteriorates because the grooves are too narrow to contain all of the detail of the sound recording. This is why many records released as a single CD have to be issued as a double album on vinyl — inch sides typically top out around 22 minutes, but albums designed for CD typically spill over 60 minutes — and why many 7-inch singles feature edits of songs that are normally extended over the five-minute mark.
But this limitation can be turned to an advantage in that putting less music on a larger side can improve sound quality, which is part of why many singles designed for DJ use are pressed as and inch records to accommodate extended mixes while allowing for excellent sound quality.
Oh, anywhere they sell it, really. If you don't live near a record store, you can't go wrong with Amazon since it stocks a wide range of new vinyl at reasonable prices and will ship anywhere.
There are other good online shops — Insound , Amoeba , Other Music , GEMM , Turntable Lab — and you can buy vinyl from the official websites of many artists and most independent labels. A lot of Urban Outfitters shops will have a small vinyl section as well. If you do have record stores in your area, by all means, buy records from them! Most record stores will also have used bins where you can buy old albums for low prices. Buying up used records this way, or at record fairs or garage sales, is a great way to build up a solid collection without spending a lot of money.
This holds true of garage sales, thrift shops, flea markets, and record fairs. Just be careful the records aren't scratched up. We installed it in one bathroom but left the other two tile for aesthetic purposes rather than functional — it works great in bathrooms as well! Hi there! We are getting read of our carpet in our living room area and replacing with flooring. We have 6 children and run a small daycare from my home. From your experience does vinyl show any smudges and smears?
Hi, Lourds! The smoother ones tend to show more smudges and smears, whereas the hand-scraped style hides a lot more of that! I think this would be a great, durable floor for a home daycare! I have had mine for 5 years! Still love it! Also have two dogs and a 5 year old granddaughter. One of my dogs is 15 and has accidents daily. I mop on an almost daily basis. Hi, was there any info. Thanks for any info! Only a 2. That number tells you how well your flooring will hold up to scratches.
Thanks for sharing your input, Angela! There may be more durable options out there — this is just the brand I had experience with as of the time of writing this post. Do you find that this flooring is easy to keep clean? Do you have any issues like this?
It definitely takes a bit more commitment to keep a dark floor clean. Any recs on the clear scuffs??? Right after we installed we had family come in and the kids would slide in their socks and creates scuffs.. Hope that helps! Can you lay it directly over tile, pergo flooring? So happy to find this post with an update! We are trying to decide what to do with our main floor. Wondering if we can just go right on top of these with the peel and stick vinyl?
That would be so great to not have to demo all the floors. What do you think? It really depends on the flooring! Technically speaking, you can definitely lay this on top of other flooring including tile.
Good luck!! This is beautiful! It listed as groutable, which we would prefer in the kitchen. Do you know of anyone that has grouted these vinyl tiles? Thanks, Casey! I say go for it, if that is preferable to you! I just installed Luxury vinyl floors in my bathroom. I used spacers when I installed them and added grout once they were in place. It turned out absoulutely amazing. I would definitely suggest going with grouted vinyl.
Its more work but worth doing. First thank you for your post!! They are a dark wood color and I am happy with the look, but I have a problem with a film appearing on them after they dry from being mopped.
We have a lot of dust right now because we are still a construction zone in another area of the house and I am sweeping religiously everyday. Thank you!! I had that problem on occasion depending on what products I was using. I found that I had the best success if I used a regular mop with a mix of water and Mrs.
With both of those strategies, I never had an issue. Hi Sunny! Yes, it worked well for us. Reading your blog helped me decide to have LV installed. Did you put anything under your furniture to protect the floor? Hi Christine! We also laid style selections luxury vinyl planks in our home just over 2 years ago. We liked it so much that we went back and bought enough to complete the three bedrooms, a. We also love it. They have discontinued the walnut color we used, so we had to switch to a different brand in a similar color for the family room and back hallway.
